How can I help my child at home?
-Read with your child (in any language). This can be reading to them, having them read to you, or sitting together as you both read silently.
-Borrow or buy books they enjoy reading.
-Check their homework daily.
-Help them study spelling & vocabulary words by quizzing them aloud, quizzing them in writing, using flashcards, using the words in conversations, etc.
-Ask and talk about what they are reading and what they are doing in school.
-Contact the teacher and ask what help your child needs.
-Help your child learn a growth mindset. See more at Mindset Online
How do I know if a book is too hard or too easy for my child?
Have him/her use the “5-finger rule:”
- Open to the first full page of the book - Put one figure up for every word you don’t know
5 fingers = too hard for now 0 fingers = too easy 2-3 fingers = just right
